Annual Halloween Candy Buy-Back Contest!
To Benefit Children, Schools, and Our Overseas Troops
There they are! Stacks and stacks of Halloween candy in every store and supermarket. And it’s never too early to start thinking about what you are going to do with all the candy after Halloween!
Dr. Ron Rotem, a Toms River dentist, is sponsoring his 7th annual Halloween Candy Buy-Back Contest for three days this year, Monday, Oct. 31 through Wednesday, November 2, noon to 4:00 each day. Bring your candy to Dr. Rotem’s dental offices, 355 Lakehurst Road, Toms River, and he will give you $1.00 a pound up to 10 lbs. per family for candy collected from Halloween trick or treating. The child who brings in the most candy, by weight, will win a $50.00 gift card.
Because of the volume of candy collected by area schools, this year only individual classrooms are eligible to win a cash prize—not schools. One teacher from either a public or private school who collects the most Halloween candy, by weight, from students in his or her classroom and brings it to Dr. Rotem’s offices will be eligible to win $400.00 to spend for his or her class.
The contest will end at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2.
When the contest is over, all the collected candy will be sent to the troops in the Mideast with the help of Patrick O’Keefe, a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 400, 3301 Hwy. 138 East, Wall Township; the Monmouth and Ocean County Central Labor Council; and the Monmouth and Ocean County Building Trades.
Dr. Rotem says, “I started this contest seven years ago as an incentive for everyone to eat less candy. I’m happy to say that each year the volume of candy has grown. Last year we collected more than a ton of candy, which was sent to our troops through the efforts of IBEW.”
For further information, call Dr. Rotem’s office at 732-341-8500.
Halloween Candy—What’s a Parent to Do?
Published on: September 28, 2010
Even before the first of October, Halloween candy is stacked high in most stores. Let’s face it—everyone loves Halloween. But how can parents safeguard their children’s teeth and still let their children enjoy the candy they will be bringing home from trick-or-treating?
Every time we eat, the natural bacteria in our mouths produce acid. It is this acid that eats away at the enamel of our teeth and causes tooth decay. Now add all that sugar from eating Halloween candy, especially all that sticky, gooey candy. Don’t despair. You can minimize the effects of eating Halloween candy.
Start now, way before Halloween, to establish some candy-eating guidelines. Tell your own trick-or-treaters that they can pick out 25 pieces (or less) of the candy they most want. Then discuss giving away the rest or donating it. I run a Halloween candy buy-back program as a special incentive to help children part with their candy.
Second, help your children pick their treats. Sticky, gooey candy and candy like lollipops and jawbreakers cause the most damage because they stay in the mouth for a long time compared to other candy treats. Plain chocolate bars or chocolate kisses are the best choices.
Third, eat Halloween candy or any candy, for that matter, immediately after a meal because the acid production from eating has already been activated. Tell your children, they can have one piece of Halloween candy for dessert. Keep in mind that eating candy between meals is not a good idea because of the extra acid it generates in the mouth.
Fourth, right after the meal, children (and adults) should brush their teeth. If this is not possible or practical, then drink some liquids, like water or milk, to wash away the sugars and starches so they don’t remain on the teeth for a long time, causing cavities.
Last of all, keep the candy stash out of sight so no one will be tempted by it. If we teach our children to use moderation, to make good choices, and to practice good dental hygiene, then it really should be a Happy Halloween.
